Everyone loves a good bargain—we’re no exception. But sometimes, the holiday shopping madness of Black Friday can be too much.
So this week, rather than spending the day after Thanksgiving squeezing through congested big box store aisles, trying to avoid eye-contact with other shoppers so as not to accidentally spark a would-be viral brawl, might we recommend a completely different alternative: buying nothing.
Buy Nothing Day is exactly what it sounds like: You buy nothing. For a whole day, you add no material objects to your collection, acquire no trinkets and toys that will only gather dust, and swipe no cards in exchange for more stuff. And yes—avoid the jam-packed parking lots and massive crowds.
Instead, take the day after Thanksgiving to get out there and relax:
- Go for a neighborhood walk with friends or family
- Head to a local park (no fluorescent lighting in sight!)
- Grab a ride and take a hike
- Volunteer at a local food bank
- Go for a scenic drive
- Get away from the city and pitch a tent
Buying nothing is easy, and when you carshare with Getaround, there’s another (big) thing you won’t have to buy: a car. Living car-free not only reduces the stress, costs, and encumbrances associated with car ownership, it also reduces your carbon footprint by helping take cars off our roads.
Black Friday doesn’t have to be so bleak. Skip the chaos this weekend and instead rent a “holiday getaway” vehicle from Getaround. We promise that the quality time you spend outside with family and friends will be far more memorable than risking life and limb for a few bucks off a tablet.
