Hello, Portland. Welcome to Getaround!

Today, we’re thrilled to announce the launch of peer-to-peer car sharing in Portland, Oregon!

This historic expansion—our first ever beyond California—is thanks to a $1.725 million federal grant awarded to us by the Federal Highway Administration. They’ve asked us to partner with the City of Portland to research the impact and value of car sharing in urban centers (hint hint—it’s a great idea).

The rollout coincides with the enactment of Oregon HB 3149, the pioneering law which encourages personal car sharing in Oregon. Think of it as a perfectly legal way to let us insure your car while people pay you to drive it!

Yes, Portlanders, you can join right now

We’re planning on an initial launch at Portland State University, followed by the greater Portland metropolitan area by February of 2012.

But starting today, we encourage all Portlanders to sign up! Membership is totally free with no fees. And if you’ve got a car you’d like to share, you can easily list it here.

We’ll grow faster with your help

Of course, it’s pretty early and we’d love your help getting people excited about Getaround. The more members and cars we get signed up in your area, the better the service will be for everyone.

Big thanks to all our Portland members who signed up early!

And for those of you who like using Getaround in San Francisco—now you know where else you can get around!
