A few weeks ago, we opened a small, private beta for our Chicago members and immediately realized we had found the next, great Getaround community.

Today, we are excited to announce that Getaround Chicago is officially open for business with over 200 cars available for rent. And already, the community is packed with variety – Chicagoans can rent everything from a Tesla to a Prius (or a BMW).

“I am pleased to welcome Getaround to Chicago, to help residents of this city meet crucial transportation needs and get where they want to go while reducing traffic and emissions” - Mayor Rahm Emanuel

WHY CHICAGO?

Those familiar with Getaround, know we are very deliberate in selecting where we launch new markets. And when we do launch a new city, we spend lots of time working with that community to make sure it thrives.

So what made us so sure that Getaround and Chicago would be a perfect fit? Allow us to explain:

Car overpopulation. There are almost 800,000 cars in the city of Chicago (and people wonder why parking is such a pain). It’s a big problem that Getaround can help solve. It has been proven that each shared car takes up to 13 cars off the road and our plan is to help make it happen in Chicago.

Chicago’s focus on cyclists and pedestrians. Mayor Emanuel and Transportation Commissioner Gabe Klein have been working hard to make the city more bike friendly. At the end of the day, our goal is to reduce the number of cars on the road, and making it easier to get around by foot and bike are an important part of that goal.

Neighborhoods that party together, stick together. Chicago’s neighborhood block parties have a long history–some have been running for over 25 years. Community is a key part of Getaround and we love that it’s important to Chicagoans too.

Bikes, block parties and a big problem to solve? Sounds like a match made in heaven.
