It’s officially summer, and the season calls for some extra play time and roadtrips. Soaking up the sun might be your jam, or maybe you’re inclined to beat the heat. Either way, if you’re an LA local, you’re lucky enough to have both options  just a short drive nearby. Grab a car for the quick 55-mile jaunt south of  LA to play in the shallow pools while observing starfish and sea urchins in their natural habitat. Open the sunroof on this 100-mile drive north of LA, to roam this historic city’s main drag full of coffee shops, boutiques, and art galleries, all leading to Stearns Wharf. For history enthusiasts, the Old Mission is a must-see to observe California’s iconic Spanish influence. Wineries abound for a tasting tour, and the Bacara Resort is the place for 5-star dining if you’re feeling like luxury.

  1. Commune with nature at Big Bear Lake

Book a FWD or AWD for this peaceful mountain trek 95 miles from LA, to soak in the tranquil vibes of nature. Big Bear Lake is a stunning spot for fishing, kayaking, inner-tubing, and waterskiing, while Castle Rock Trail is a moderately challenging favorite for hikers. Grab beers and eats in The Village after you take a stroll through this charming town center.

  1. Throwback to the 50s in Palm Springs

Get ready to crank the AC in your ride as you roll into Palm Desert, 105 miles from LA. Rise early to beat the heat on a breathtaking hike for all levels at Agua Caliente. An afternoon swim and poolside nap at the trendy Ace Hotel is a must-do, before you head out for the famed downtown nightlife on Palm Canyon Drive—a bustling stretch of shops, restaurants, and clubs.

  1. Splash around San Diego

Stash a camera in the dash, and head 120 miles south of LA to picturesque La Jolla Cove, where you can snorkel, sightsee, and observe the assemblage of seals along the coast.! Pay your respects at Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial and enjoy its unbeatable 360-degree vista. An oceanside dinner at Duke’s promises more epic views of the sea.

  1. Camp in Joshua Tree

Load up your Getaround with camping gear and hit the road for this great escape 150 miles from LA. Belle Campground feels like the beautiful middle of nowhere, but each site comes equipped with a picnic table and fire pit. Hike Arch Rock Nature Trail in the day, perch atop a boulder for an infinite sunset, and take in the glistening Milky Way after dark.
